Robyn’s Extremely Online Round-up #28: Too old for Leonardo DiCaprio

There was always room for two people on that door in Titanic, by the way. Welcome to another edition of my Extremely Online series.

At Cyclist, we’ve been following the ongoing Vuelta a España and the Tour of Britain. If You’re Reading This (that’s a Drake meme), we’re into the final week of the final Grand Tour of the year. Sigh.

Will, Martin and I have been ferociously comparing our predictions for the final Grand Tour of the year – but how much prize money will the winner receive? A lot, that’s for sure.

I also had the honour of writing about the new Timberland Anorak and Canyon Sports Bra in our latest In the Drops and we revisited our look at the history of cycling through the unique lens of 1,000 derailleurs

But I know you’re dying to see how Leonardo DiCaprio relates to cycling journalism, so let’s get into it.

Heartbreak for Lotto Soudal

A viral graph from Reddit user TrustLittleBrother on r/dataisbeautiful showing DiCaprio’s age vs that of his girlfriends.

The latest meme going around centres on Leonardo DiCaprio, and how the actor continues to break up with his girlfriends before they reach the age of 25.

What I gather from this is that I have one year left should I wish to be considered as a candidate (I do not), and the Extremely Online series would already be at the retirement home in his eyes.

How does this relate to cycling, you ask?

Mainstream memes take around 2-4 business days to filter into the cycling world and Lotto Soudal posted this screenshot from their Wikipedia page.

‘Guess we won’t be Leonardo DiCaprio’s favourite cycling team,’ they tweeted, noting the team had been founded in 1985.

How do you do, fellow kids?

There must be something in the air at Lotto Soudal.

At just 35 years of age, Thomas De Gendt is the third eldest rider in the team behind Philippe Gilbert and Roger Kluge.

Lotto Soudal has taken a young team to the Vuelta a España this year. Behind De Gendt, the oldest rider on the squad is Kamil Malecki at the ripe old age of… 26 years old.

I wonder what they talk about on the team bus. Taxes? The good old days? Being too old for Leonardo DiCaprio?

Now what?

Irishmen Ryan Mullen and Sam Bennett joined Bora-Hansgrohe at the same time for the start of the 2022 season, Mullen from Trek-Segafredo and Bennett from QuickStep Alpha Vinyl.

Bora – the kitchen company – already snapped the duo up for a funny video on cooking fried salmon and mashed potatoes – and the pair are seemingly joined at the hip.

Unfortunately, just not anymore at the Vuelta. Bennett was forced to withdraw after two stage wins with a positive Covid test.

He’s one of many testing positive at this Grand Tour, but I’m sure that doesn’t offer comfort for his teammate.

Special shoutout: Lachlan Morton in memory of Suleiman ‘Sule’ Kangangi

The cycling world was shocked at the recent passing of Sule Kangangi while competing in a Vermont gravel…
