Robert Downey Jr. becomes Tony Stark again in this incredible video featuring clips from Marvel’s What If…?
Throughout its run, Marvel’s What If…? entertained and gripped viewers. The first of Marvel Studios’ animated series on Disney Plus, it reimagined how the world of the Marvel Cinematic Universe would look if a number of things played out differently, tweaking events here and there to highlight the expansive effects they could have on the universe.
One of the beauties of that show is that it allows fans to revisit some familiar MCU characters and moments in animation form, showcasing us some impressive work that resembles their live-action counterparts.
While the animation and character designs certainly do resemble the stars who portrayed these characters in the MCU movies and TV shows, this fan video allows us to see a somewhat more lifelike version of one beloved character, taking things to another level. Check it out below:
What If…? fan video features Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark
YouTube user StryderHD has already created some outstanding videos, using DeepFake technology to place one actor’s likeness onto another’s in order to create the illusion that they are playing the role in question. We have seen this with the likes of Millie Bobby Brown becoming Princess Leia and Sebastian Stan becoming Mark Hamill’s Luke Skywalker.
Here, however, we see Robert Downey Jr.’s face placed over the animated character featured in the sixth episode of What If…? to create a more lifelike look from the MCU’s Iron Man. It certainly helps that the What If…? design already resembles the star, but StryderHD takes it up a notch to give him a more realistic look.
Is Robert Downey Jr. in What If…?
One of the things that disappointed fans about Marvel’s What If…? was the fact that not every major character was voiced by the actor who portrayed them in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. While stars like Chris Hemsworth and Tom Hiddleston did return to voice their respective characters Thor and Loki, others such as Robert Downey Jr. and Scarlett Johansson did not.
According to series director Bryan Andrews, this was down to scheduling issues. As a result, Iron Man is voiced by Mick Wingert – who does a fantastic job of mimicking Robert Downey Jr.’s signature Tony Stark.
Here’s hoping that the former MCU star does indeed reprise his role in What If…? season 2 (that is, if the show is ever finished killing Tony!).
