Five years ago, Adele beat Beyoncé for the Album of the Year Grammy with her massive set 25. It was assumed the British star would take home the trophy, but many felt that Bey’s Lemonade should have run away with the honor, as it was an enormous critical success, and these days it is often suggested that the singer-songwriter is overdue for a win in this category.
The 2023 Grammys will see the two women compete once again for Album of the Year, and this time around, they once more seem like the most likely candidates for the prize. Adele is looking to become the second woman to land a trio of these trophies with her massive-but-largely-moved-on-from 30, while Beyoncé’s ‘90s-house-themed Renaissance could become the rare electronic effort to come out on top.
Here are my predictions for the 10 nominees for Album of the Year at the 2023 Grammys.
Adele – 30
Bad Bunny – Un Verano Sin Ti
Brandi Carlile – In These Silent Days
Harry Styles – Harry’s House
Kendrick Lamar – Mr. Morale & the Big Steppers
Lizzo – Special
Steve Lacy – Gemini Rights
Taylor Swift – Red (Taylor’s Version)
Zach Bryan – American Heartbreak
This year, it seems like at least half of the spots in the Album of the Year category are already spoken for, making it a particularly packed period for potential winners. Two-time champion Adele will surely compete again, while Beyoncé and Kendrick Lamar will continue to work toward their first wins, with many feeling they’ve been snubbed too many times before. Bad Bunny and Harry Styles are also all but guaranteed to be nominated as well, as they claim two of the most critically-acclaimed and most-consumed projects of the year.
Taylor Swift is a strong contender as well, though some voters might feel weird about nominating a re-release, even if it came with many new tracks. Swift has already earned a trio of Album of the Year Grammys, so it’s not as if she’s lacking in this category.
Newcomers Steve Lacy and Zach Bryan could find themselves in the running, while prior nominees Brandi Carlile and Lizzo are also likely nominees.
ABBA (Voyage), Alison Krauss & Robert Plant (Raise the Roof), Coldplay (Music of the Spheres), Ed Sheeran (=), Elton John (The Lockdown Sessions), Future (I Never Liked You), Miranda Lambert (Palomino), Rosalía (Motomami), Summer Walker (Still Over It), and the Encanto soundtrack.
The nominees for the 2023 Grammys will be announced on November 15.
