Academy Award-winning actor Tom Hanks’ debut novel The Making of Another Major Motion Picture Masterpiece will hit bookstores next May, he announced Tuesday, as the beloved producer and screenwriter branches into another form of storytelling.
The Making of Another Major Motion Picture Masterpiece tells the story of the production of a superhero action film from the 1940s (when the comic it’s based on was drawn) to the present day.
Three comic books that were created by Hanks and featured in the story will be included in the novel.
Hanks told People the book draws heavily on his experience in the film industry, saying “even the foolish moments are some kind of stunt I’ve pulled or mistake I’ve survived.”
The Making of Another Major Motion Picture Masterpiece is Hanks’ second book—he published Uncommon Type, a collection of short stories, in 2017.
“I hope the book captures as much of ‘the accidental judgements and casual slaughter’ that go into a motion picture’s dictum to hold ‘a mirror up to nature’ that I have witnessed (and caused) since I joined the Screen Actors Guild,” Hanks told People.
Hanks, 66, began his acting career in the 1980 horror film He Knows You’re Alone. He has since been nominated for six Oscars, and won two for his roles in Forrest Gump and Philadelphia. Hank has won eight Golden Globes, including the Cecil B. deMille Award in 2020. His production company Playtone has produced the Hanks-led film Castaway and favorites like Mamma Mia!, My Big Fat Greek Wedding and The Polar Express. In 2016, he was given the Presidential Medal Of Freedom from former President Barack Obama.
Hanks’ impressive filmography includes romantic comedies, war epics, animated kids’ movies and heart-wrenching dramas, but he has never starred in a superhero film, despite the plot of his debut novel.
